PUC Approves Decoupling Fee for HECO

The state Public Utility Commission approved a request from Hawaiian Electric Company and its subsidiaries for a decoupling fee. That means your electric bill will increase by $4.89 a month on Oahu. HELCO customers on the Big Island will pay $3.92 more and Maui residents will see their bills go up by $4.90 through MECO. Molokai and Lanai residents will have to pay $3.27 more. Many states use the controversial billing strategy called "decoupling." It gives HECO a predictable revenue stream, even when energy use is down.
